In November of 2008, Marshall McKinnon decided to open up his own home theater design company. McKinnon started his business because he wanted to bring an affordable home theater option to the residents of Utah. “No other AV company in the state offered affordable solutions for home owners,” said McKinnon.. “AV has always been a passion of mine and it is fun to bring families together to show them what we can do.”

Theater Xtreme, McKinnon’s company, has a large showroom that provides customers the opportunity to come in and choose the style of room, and the option that best fits their budget. According to McKinnon, the company has seven different rooms in their showroom that customers can visit and experience different systems. “Most of our competitors have one large $60,000 room. We have rooms starting at $4,999,” said McKinnon.  “It goes back to why I got into this in the first place; to be able to provide a great experience that people like my family and friends can afford.”

According to McKinnon, the hardest thing about starting a theater design company in Utah has been fighting the stigma that home theater systems are only something that the wealthy can afford. “Prices have come down so much and technology has gotten so much better…families can afford it,” said McKinnon.

McKinnon has big plans for the future and his business. “Within the next 10 years I would like to work with more builders to provide correctly wired homes. Most builders wire things the cheapest way possible but take no thought as to how people are actually using technology today. I would like to help builders future proof their homes so that when we go into those homes to install as system we don't have to do a bunch of retro-wiring,” said McKinnon.

In McKinnon’s opinion, the best word to describe him and his company is “dedicated.”
